LFT presents School Bell Awards for reporting

Former LFT presidents receive Federation Pioneer Award

(Baton Rouge – November 24, 2014) Former Louisiana Federation of Teachers Presidents Dr. William Savage, Carrel Epling and Fred Skelton today received Pioneer Awards from the Louisiana Federation of Teachers. The award is presented annually to individuals who, over the years, made major contributions to the growth and influence of the LFT.

Federation chapters receive Union Values in Action Awards

Six local chapters of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers received the Union Values in Action Award for improving the lives of members, enhancing the influence of the union and advancing the mission of public education.

This convention marked the eighth year that Union Values Awards have been given to LFT local chapters. The award recognizes the efforts of local LFT chapters to promote the union agenda and express commitment to the values that make the Federation the largest professional organization for teachers and school employees in Louisiana.

LFT President Steve Monaghan was re-elected as president of the LFT for a three-year term at the LFT’s 50th annual convention on Monday, November 24.

Rep. John Bel Edwards is LFT’s Friend of Education

State Representative John Bel Edwards of Amite has been named the Louisiana Federation of Teachers’ Friend of Education for 2014. The Friend of Education Award is the highest honor that the Louisiana Federation of Teachers bestows on a non-member of the union. It is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to public education.

Collective Bargaining Update

Thanks to everyone who completed the MPEC collective bargaining survey for Bargaining Unit G members. We incorporated the items you indicated as important in our plans. The current collective bargaining agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will expire on June 30, 2015. Monetary issues for 2016 and beyond must be negotiated prior to January 1, 2015 in order to be included in the Governor's budget for fiscal year 2016.

What's an LMC?

Negotiations are used to resolve many issues that arise during the year; however, it is not the only vehicle we have to address issues that occur between negotiations. One of the most powerful tools that the Union and Management have to solve problems is the Labor Management Committee (LMC) which, by contract, can be established at each department, facility, and agency.

Dear members of AFT Local 3535 (TAUWP),

I hope everyone will join us on Friday, December 12, from 4-6 PM at the Riverwest Public House to celebrate the end of the semester and the beginning of the winter holidays. Over the coming months it should be our goal to continue to expand our union and to be a stronger force for faculty and academic staff on the UWM campus. In January, I’ll be in touch with dates for next semester’s general membership meetings.
