It has come to our attention this week that reports of violent threats have been made and directed at schools within our district.
Please know that we have been assured that DPSCD Administration and the Detroit Police Department are actively communicating with parents and the general community as well as investigating all reports and responding to them appropriately. We understand that messages aren't getting to staff timely or at all. Communication to staff should come from your building administration or district officials. If this does not occur, let the union know.
Have you ever felt non-essential? Being called non-essential can be a bit deflating even if the result was that you wouldn't have to report to work on a snowy day. There has been a quiet push to eliminate the labels of essential/non-essential and yesterday, Governor Malloy signed Executive Order #65 which modifies the terminology.
The usual attacks on state employees continue in the 2018 Legislative Session. Several bills have been introduced at the Legislature which seek to curtail state employee benefits but this session added a new twist: a Fiscal Stability Commission was convened and submitted a report to the legislature. This Commission was created as part of the 2017 Budget deal and is comprised of CEO-types which quickly earned them the nickname of "the Yacht Club" or the “Let Them Eat Cake Commission”.

Last year Florida Governor Rick Scott signed HB 7055 into law. Among the many bad provisions in this omnibus education bill, is one which calls for the decertification of teachers’ unions that have below 50% dues paying members. This is a clear effort to silence the voice of our state’s teachers’ unions, which is the strongest voice advocating on behalf of educators, students and public education.
